Dyslexia Intervention: How do I know the school is doing it right?

There are many intervention programs on the market, what do parents need to know about the programs offered to students with dyslexia? What questions should parents ask? We will discuss progress monitoring, fidelity of programming, training of providers, and the appropriateness to meet your student’s needs.

 

 

 

Daphne Corder is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Special Education Advocate specializing in dyslexia advocacy. Daphne has an extensive background in working with children with various disabilities in hospital, foster care, and school settings.  Daphne holds a certificate in Special Education Advocacy from William and Mary Law School and has been an active member of Decoding Dyslexia Texas, the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates, and Dyslexia Smart in her hometown of Laredo, Texas. She has been involved in advocacy at the state level for several years and has served as a stakeholder for dyslexia-related issues.

Session B

No program is perfect! What to look for in instructional materials?

Kari Kurto, National Science of Reading Project Director at The Reading League will discuss the Reading League’s curriculum evaluation tool, which assesses a curriculum’s research-based practices. Aligning curriculum to the science of reading is essential this conversation will help parents and teachers make informed decisions when choosing or advocating for curriculum.

Kari Kurto, as National Science of Reading Project Director at The Reading League she directs all work related to The Reading League Compass, the Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines, and the Curriculum Navigation Reports. She also leads work to support multilingual and English learners and runs several communities of practice. Kari is a Path Forward advisory group member and has presented to schools, districts, professional organizations, and state education departments. She formerly worked as a literacy specialist at the Rhode Island Department of Education, leading statewide efforts to implement the RI Right to Read Act. Kari is an OG practitioner who worked at Middlebridge School in Narragansett RI and Rawson Saunders School in Austin TX.
